II. Pathophysiology
- Non-motile, non-spore forming rod-shaped (or pleiomorphic) Bacteria
- Corynebacterium is derived from Greek (Koryne=Club, Bacterion=Little Rod)
- May be aerobic or anaerobic
III. Types
- Corynebacterium diphtheriae (Diphtheria)
- Coryneform Bacteria (Diphtheroids)
- Includes multiple genera in addition to Corynebacterium (e.g. Arcanobacterium, Brevibacterium, Microbacterium)
- Colonize human skin as well as soil and water
- Frequently found in contaminated cultures in hospitalized patients
- Community acquired infections
- Nosocomial infections
