II. Types: Non-Enterococcus

  1. Organisms
    1. Streptococcus equinus
    2. Streptococcus bovis
      1. Frequently found in patients with Colon Cancer
  2. Characteristics
    1. Gram-positive facultative anaerobic cocci
  3. Infections
    1. These organisms colonize the human GI Tract as normal flora (similar to Enterococcus)
    2. Like enterococci, these are hardy organisms that can survive in the harsh GI Tract, including 40% bile
    3. Cause similar infections to Enterococcus (including Bacterial Endocarditis)
      1. Extracellular Dextran allows binding to Heart Valves (Streptococcus Viridans, Group D Strep, Enterococcus)

III. Types: Enterococcus

  1. See Enterococcus
  2. See Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus
  3. Background
    1. Enterococcus was classified under Streptococcus until 1984, and is now its own genus
    2. Enterococcus was reclassified under its own genus as of 1984 following DNA analysis
  4. Characteristics
    1. Lactic AcidBacteria
    2. Gram-positive facultative anaerobic cocci
  5. Organisms
    1. Enterococcus faecalis
    2. Enterococcus faecium
  6. Infections
    1. Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus
    2. Enterococcus is a colonizer, normal flora of the human Gastrointestinal Tract
    3. Enterococci are hardy organisms that can survive in the harsh GI Tract, including 40% bile
    4. Infections typically occur in Immunocompromised or debilitated hospital patients
      1. Urinary Tract Infections
      2. Bacterial Endocarditis
      3. Diverticulitis
      4. Meningitis
      5. Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis
