II. Labs: Characteristics

  1. Shares common appearance with other Staphylococci
    1. Gram Positive Cocci in irregular clusters
    2. Facultative Anaerobes
    3. Beta hemolytic
      1. As with Beta Hemolytic Streptococcus, hemolyze RBCs on sheep blood agar plate (BAL)
    4. Catalase positive
      1. Catalase converts Hydrogen Peroxide (from Macrophages, PMNs) into water and oxygen
      2. Catalase positive organisms on a culture plate will bubble when exposed to Hydrogen Peroxide
  2. Unique Staphylococcus Saprophyticus features
    1. Coagulase-Negative Organism
      1. Contrast with the coagulase positive Staphylococcus Aureus

III. Pathophysiology

  1. Urinary Tract Infections in Sexually Active women
    1. Accounts for 10-15% UTIs in young women (4% of overall UTIs in women)
    2. More aggressive and Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections
    3. Associated with Pyelonephritis

Ontology: Staphylococcus saprophyticus (C0318112)

Definition (MSH) A species of gram-positive bacteria in the family STAPHYLOCOCCACEAE. It commonly causes urinary tract infections in humans.
Definition (NCI_CDISC) Any bacterial organism that can be assigned to the species Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
Definition (NCI) A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is positive for catalase and urease and negative for coagulase, oxidase, and alkaline phosphatase. It can metabolize glucose, maltose, sucrose, turanose, mannitol, glycerol, fructose, lactose, trehalose and xylitol but not mannose, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, ribose or cellobiose. S. saprophyticus is a commensal organism in humans and is a pathogen that causes urinary tract infections in women.
