- Anaerobic Bacteria
- Bacteria that do not require oxygen to grow or respirate
- Anaerobes normally colonize the mouth, GI Tract and skin of healthy patients
- Anaerobes penetrate tissue with poor oxygenation, forming abscesses, and producing foul-smelling gas
- Anaerobic infections are often with mixed Gram Positive and Gram Negative organisms
