IV. Mechanism

  1. See Bile Acid Sequestrant
  2. Binds bile salts
    1. Results in insoluble complexes that are excreted in the stool

V. Dosing: Adult

  1. Tablets (1 gram each)
    1. Start 2 grams orally twice daily with a 6 to 8 ounces of liquid
    2. Maximum: 16 grams/day
  2. Granules (5 grams per 7.5 grams powder)
    1. Start 5 grams orally twice daily in 90 ml non-carbonated liquid
    2. Titrate in 5 gram increments every 1 to 2 months
    3. Maximum: 30 g/day

VI. Dosing: Child

  1. Not FDA approved in children
  2. Start 125 to 250 mg/kg/day orally divided 2 to 4 times daily up to 10 to 20 grams/day

VII. Drug Interactions

  1. See Bile Acid Sequestrant
  2. Take other medications at least 1 hour before 4 to 6 hours after Colestipol
  3. Take with water or orange juice before meals
