- Hyperlipidemia adjunctive management (rare use)
III. Contraindications

- Serum Triglycerides >400 mg/dl
IV. Mechanism
- See Bile Acid Sequestrant
- Binds bile salts
- Results in insoluble complexes that are excreted in the stool
V. Dosing: Adult
- Tablets (1 gram each)
- Start 2 grams orally twice daily with a 6 to 8 ounces of liquid
- Maximum: 16 grams/day
- Granules (5 grams per 7.5 grams powder)
- Start 5 grams orally twice daily in 90 ml non-carbonated liquid
- Titrate in 5 gram increments every 1 to 2 months
- Maximum: 30 g/day
VI. Dosing: Child
- Not FDA approved in children
- Start 125 to 250 mg/kg/day orally divided 2 to 4 times daily up to 10 to 20 grams/day
VII. Drug Interactions
- See Bile Acid Sequestrant
- Take other medications at least 1 hour before 4 to 6 hours after Colestipol
- Take with water or orange juice before meals
