  1. Glycerol (Glycerin) is a trihydroxyalcohol (1,2,3-trihydroxypropane), an intermediate Carbohydrate in Glucose Metabolism

    1. Increases blood osmolality and mobilizes water from tissue into the interstitium and plasma
  3. Diuretic Effect
    1. At the nephron's proximal tubule, Glycerin prevents water reabsorption
    2. Increases urinary excretion of Sodium and water (and decreased Blood Volume)
  4. Laxative Effect (Rectal Suppository)
    1. Hyperosmotic Laxative effect, drawing water into the Rectum
  5. Glycerin commercial use
    1. Solvent
    2. Humectant (maintains moisture, e.g. lotion)
    3. Pharmaceutical vehicle

IV. Pharmacokinetics

  1. Glycerin Suppository stimulates bowel evacuation within 15 to 60 minutes

V. Dosing: Glcerin Suppository

  1. Insert suppository high in the Rectum and retain for at least 15 minutes
  2. Infant to age 2 years
    1. Insert 1/2 pediatric suppository per Rectum once daily as needed
  3. Age 2 to 5 years
    1. Insert 1 pediatric suppository per Rectum once daily as needed
  4. Age 6 years to adult
    1. Insert 1 adult suppository per Rectum once daily as needed

VI. Adverse Effects

  1. Anal or rectal mucosa irritation
