III. Physiology
- Sensory for pain, touch and Temperature
- Mucosa of pharynx, fauces, and Palatine Tonsil
- Taste Sensation for posterior third of Tongue
- Motor with CN 9 to pharynx
IV. Anatomy
- Nucleii in Medulla
- Somatic Motor Nucleii
- Nucleus Ambiguous transmits signals for Swallowing
- Visceral Motor Nucleii
- Inferior Salivatory nucleus innervates Parotid Gland (via otic Ganglion)
- Visceral Sensory Nucleii
- Nucleus Solitarius transmits taste signals from posterior third of Tongue
- Also transmits signals from carotid body and carotid sinus
- Somatic Sensory Nucleii
- Spinal Nucleus of CN 5 transmits signals from External Ear and posterior third of Tongue
- Somatic Motor Nucleii
- Course
- Starts in one of four nucleii in the Medulla (see above)
- Passes through jugular foramen of skull
- Follows Internal Carotid Artery
- Passes under styloid process and then into pharynx
- Synapses at superior ganglia and inferior ganglia
V. Exam
- Done concurrently with Exam of CN 10
