II. Indication
-
Bleeding Disorder
- Replaced by von specific tests (Willebrand Factor Activity, Von Willebrand Factor Antigen, Factor VIII Level)
- Historical indications
- Replaced Bleeding Time to assess Platelet function
- Personal or Family History of easy Bruising or bleeding
- Epistaxis
- Menorrhagia
- Post-operative bleeding
III. Protocol: Sample
- Citrate anticoagulated whole blood
IV. Mechanism
- Rapid quantitation of Platelet function for Hemostasis
- Blood passed through high shear flow system
- System measures time to occlude membrane
- Blood is tested with two membranes
- Collagen/Epinephrine (CEPI) membrane
- Collagen/Adenosine Diphosphate (CADP) membrane specific for Aspirin
V. Interpretation: Normal
- CEPI closure <175
VI. Causes: Abnormal (prolonged closure time)
- Von Willebrand's Disease
- Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia
- Thrombasthenia
- Thrombocytopenia with Platelet Count <100,000/mm3
- Anemia with Hematocrit <35%
- Aspirin (will prolong only the CEPI membrane time)
