II. Physiology: Collagen
- Collagen is a polypeptide accounting for one third of all Protein in mammals
- Group of large fibrous Proteins (at least 29 unique types) that are the key component of connective tissue
- Also found in skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, teeth and blood vessels
- Forms a triple helix, that acts a structural Protein
- Collagen is composed of four Amino Acids (Proline, glycline, Lysine, hydroxyproline)
- Collagen is damaged by environmental factors
- Tobacco Smoking
- Ultraviolet light or Sun Exposure
