II. Physiology: Collagen

  1. Collagen is a polypeptide accounting for one third of all Protein in mammals
  2. Group of large fibrous Proteins (at least 29 unique types) that are the key component of connective tissue
    1. Also found in skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, teeth and blood vessels
    2. Forms a triple helix, that acts a structural Protein
  3. Collagen is composed of four Amino Acids (Proline, glycline, Lysine, hydroxyproline)
    1. Synthesis relies on nutritional intake of Vitamins and trace minerals (Vitamin C, zinc, Copper, manganese)
  4. Collagen is damaged by environmental factors
    1. Tobacco Smoking
    2. Ultraviolet light or Sun Exposure

Definition (NCI_NCI-GLOSS) A fibrous protein found in cartilage and other connective tissue.
Definition (NCI) A family of large fibrous proteins that are the main components of connective tissue and are responsible for maintaining tissue structure.
Definition (CSP) principle protein of connective tissue; unusual absence of sulfur aminoacids; unique presence of hydroxyproline is believed to permit a triple helical fibrous structure.
Definition (MSH) A polypeptide substance comprising about one third of the total protein in mammalian organisms. It is the main constituent of SKIN; CONNECTIVE TISSUE; and the organic substance of bones (BONE AND BONES) and teeth (TOOTH).
