II. Definitions

  1. Colostrum
    1. Thin, yellow, serous fluid secreted by mammary glands in pregnancy and immediate Postpartum Period
    2. Lactation begins within the first few days after delivery, and until then, Breast Feeding infants are receiving colostrum
    3. Colostrum contains concentrated immune components (e.g. Antibody, WBCs) as well as nutrition (fat, Protein, Carbohydrates)
  2. Hyperimmune Bovine Colostrum
    1. Source cows are innoculated repeatedly in pregnancy with various pathogens, to which they develop an Antibody response
    2. In the first few days after calving, secreted colostrum is collected from these cows
    3. Hyperimmune colostrum contains high concentrations of antibodies as well as other colostrum nutritional factors
    4. Hyperimmune colostrum is used as a supplement in Immunocompromised patients
    5. Available as a dried powder, tablet or capsule
    6. Marketed as "Miracle Milk" or "Liquid Gold"

III. Indications

  1. Acute Diarrhea
    1. Hyperimmune Bovine Colostrum has been evaluated only in small studies for <3 weeks (see below)

IV. Contraindications

  1. Bovine milk allergy

V. Adverse Effects

  1. Expensive ($1000/month in 2025)
  2. Infectious disease transmission
    1. Theoretical risk

VI. Safety

  1. Avoid in pregnancy and Lactation (inadequate safety data)

VII. Efficacy

  1. Hyperimmune Bovine Colostrum has been primarily evaluated in small, older studies

Definition (NCI) A dietary supplement consisting of bovine colostrum, containing high titers of immunoglobulins (Igs), with immunostimulating and anti-infective activities. Hyperimmune bovine colostrum is harvested during the first days after calving from cows that have been inoculated repeatedly with specific pathogens during pregnancy. In addition to high titers of anti-pathogen specific antibodies, hyperimmune colostrum is also rich in other immune factors, proline-rich polypeptides (PRP), lactoferrin, glycoproteins, lactalbumins, cytokines, growth factors, vitamins, and minerals. This dietary supplement may exhbit anti-infective activity in immunocompromised patients.
