II. Definitions
- Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST, SGOT)
- Serum transaminase marker of hepatocyte injury
 - AST is also found in Muscle, liver and brain
- Contrast with ALT which is specific to the liver

III. Labs
- Level: <35 U/L
 - Elevation Severity (based on Upper Limit of Normal or ULN)
- Borderline <2x ULN
 - Mild 2-5x ULN
 - Moderate 5-15x ULN
 - Severe >15x ULN
 - Massive >10,000 U/L

IV. Increased
- See Liver Function Test Abnormality
 - Sensitive marker for hepatocellular marker
- Same causes as Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)

 - AST is less specific then ALT (present outside liver)
- Heart, lung, Kidney, brain, Pancreas, Muscle
 - White Blood Cells and Red Blood Cells

 -
Liver disease causes of increased AST
- See Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)

 - Non-liver disease causes of increased AST
 - Conditions with ratio of AST to ALT > 2
- Alcoholism
 - Wilson's Disease (ratio may exceed 4)
