II. Indications
- Used to calculate Free Thyroxine Index (FTI)
- Interpret in conjunction with Total T4 or Total T3
- Corrects for abnormal Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG)
-
Free T4 also corrects for Thyroid Binding Globulin
- Free T4 is preferred over FTI (and T3RU)
III. Measurement
- Unbound Thyroid Binding Globulin filled with T3
- Remaining unbound Triiodothyronine (T3) is measured
IV. Interpretation: Increased T3 Resin Uptake
- Hyperthyroidism
- Systemic illness
- Cirrhosis
- Nephrotic Syndrome
- X-linked decreased Thyroid Binding Globulin
- Cushing's Disease
- Acromegaly
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Drugs
V. Interpretation: Decreased T3 Resin Uptake
- Hypothyroidism
- Pregnancy
- Hepatitis
- Porphyria
- X-Linked increased Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG)
- Primary Biliary Cirrhosis
- Malnutrition
- Drugs
