- Read food contents labels
- Avoid foods containing:- Milk or dry milk solids
- Lactose
- Curds
- Whey
 
- Do not completely eliminate dairy products- Risk of Vitamin Deficiency
- Ensure adequate Vitamin intake
 
IV. Milk Products
- Avoid- Milk- May tolerate <250-375 ml or 8-12 oz per day
 
- Cheese- Swiss, Jarlsberg, Edam, Sharp cheddar are tolerated
 
- Yogurt- May be tolerated due to live cultures
 
- Milk Admixtures (Chocolate milk, Ice cream, Sherbet)- Admixtures may be tolerated
 
- Butter
- Cream cheese
- Custard or pudding
 
- Milk
- Alternative agents tolerated in Lactose Intolerance- Non-dairy synthetics (e.g. Coffee-Mate)
- Soy Milk
- Rice Milk
- Lactaid Milk- Lactose Digestion may be incomplete
- May not be tolerated
 
- Nutramigen (infant formula)
 
V. Prepared foods with Lactose (avoid)
- Creamed or breaded meat, fish or poultry
- Some Sausages and sliced deli meats- Kosher meats do not have lactose
 
- Creamed, breaded or buttered vegetables or potatoes
- Some instant potatoes
- Prepared muffin, biscuit, pancakes or their mixes
- Prepared cakes and cookies or their mixes
- Some hot cereals (e.g. cream of wheat)
- Some margarines and dressings prepared with milk
- Cream soups
- Some canned or frozen fruits
- Molasses or caramels
- Instant coffee (Folgers is lactose-free)
- Some powdered drinks (Tang is lactose-free)
- Some Sugar Substitutes
