- Regular respirations at 12 to 16 breaths/minute in adults (see Breathing Rate)
- Cerebral Lesions (Cheyne-Stokes Respiration)
- Alternating hyperpnea and apnea at regular intervals (30 second to 2 minute cycles)
- Smooth waxing and waning in depth of respiration

Midbrain lesions
- Rapid Breathing Rate

Pons lesions
- Slow, gasping or agonal breaths

Medulla lesions
- Irregular in both Breathing Rate and depth
