II. Indications

  1. Possible Cervical Spine Injury or Thoracolumbar Injury AND
  2. Removal of Spine Board and back examination (Trauma Secondary Survey)

III. Precautions

  1. Safe spine precautions require 4 people for adult Log Roll

IV. Technique

  1. Assumes patient starting supine
  2. Staff positioning on side toward Log Roll
    1. Person 1 at head controls head and Cervical Spine
    2. Person 2 at torso controls body
    3. Person 3 at knees controls lower extremities
  3. Staff positioning on side away from Log Roll
    1. Person 4 (examiner) ready to remove Spine Board and examine back
  4. Procedure
    1. Person 1 (at head) leads the Log Roll
      1. On their count to 3, the team rolls the patient away from the examiner (person 4)
    2. Person 4 (examiner)
      1. Removes Spine Board
      2. Examines the back
    3. Person 1 (at head) leads the Log Roll back to supine position
