II. Criteria: Beighton Score Exam - One Point for each of 9 criteria
- Passively dorsiflex fifth metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP joint) >90 degrees
- Score 1: Right Side
- Score 1: Left Side
- Oppose thumb to volar Forearm
- Score 1: Right Side
- Score 1: Left Side
- Hyperextend elbow >10 degrees
- Score 1: Right Side
- Score 1: Left Side
- Hyperextend knee >10 degrees
- Score 1: Right Side
- Score 1: Left Side
- Bend forward with knees fully extended, and place hands flat on floor
- Score 1: Bend Forward
III. Criteria: Five Point Hypermobility Questionnaire (adjunctive if inadequate points on exam)
- Can you place your hands flat on floor without bending your knees (now or ever in past)?
- Can you bend your thumb to touch your Forearm (now or ever in past)?
- As a child, could you do "splits" or contort your body into strange shapes?
- As a child or teen, did your Shoulder or knee cap (Patella) dislocate more than one time?
- Do you consider yourself double jointed?
IV. Interpretation: Generalized Joint Hypermobility Diagnosis
- Prepubertal children or teens
- Beighton Score >= 6 or
- Beighton Score >= 5 AND two or more questions positive on Five Point Questionnaire
- Postpuberty teens to age 50 years old
- Beighton Score >= 5 or
- Beighton Score >= 4 AND two or more questions positive on Five Point Questionnaire
- Age over 50 years old
- Beighton Score >= 4 or
- Beighton Score >= 3 AND two or more questions positive on Five Point Questionnaire
