II. Pathophysiology
- Maternal Rh Sensitization
- Maternal anti-Rh Antibodies are present in newborn plasma
- Results in fetal Hemolytic Anemia (Alloimmune Hemolytic Anemia)
- Increased Unconjugated Hyperbilirubinemia
- Compensating Erythropoiesis
- Hepatosplenomegaly
- Red Blood Cell production and destruction
- Placenta enlarged
- Additional Risk Factors
- G6PD Deficiency (highest risk for Kernicterus)
III. Labs
- Direct Antibody Test (Direct Coombs test) positive
IV. Differential Diagnosis
V. Complications
- Fetal hydrops
- Hemolytic Anemia
- Congenital Anemia (Mild Hemolysis)
- Icterus Gravis (Severe Hemolysis)
- Kernicterus
