II. Pathophysiology

  1. Infected cystic blood filled spaces in hepatic lobules
  2. Complication of Bacillary Angiomatosis caused by Bartonella Henselae (or B. quintana)
  3. Occurs in AIDS (CD4 Count <100 cells/mm3) or other Immunocompromised patients

III. Symptoms

  1. Anorexia
  2. Nausea
  3. Abdominal Pain
  4. Fever
  5. Weight loss
  6. Vascular skin lesions
    1. Distinguish from Kaposi's Sarcoma
  7. Disseminated infection (complicated cases)
    1. May infect bone, mucosa, CNS or Heart Valves (endocarditis)

IV. Labs

  1. Bartonella Henselae (or B. quintana) Antibody titer increases

V. Imaging

  1. Right upper quadrant Ultrasound
    1. Hepatic Cystic lesions (or splenic lesions)
    2. Distinguish from Liver Abscess
