III. Pathophysiology
- Milk-filled retention cyst that occurs during Lactation
IV. Symptoms
- Painless swelling within the Breast
V. Signs
- Most often single and small at onset (but may enlarge over time)
- Retroareolar location is most common
- However, Galactoceles can occur anywhere in the Breast
VI. Imaging
- Breast Ultrasound
- Fine needle aspirate with white milky fluid
VII. Differential Diagnosis
- See Breast Mass
- Breast Abscess (often with overlying Mastitis)
- Breast Cancer
- Breast cyst
- Breast fibroadenoma
VIII. Management
- Needle aspiration of the retention cyst (Galactocele) is diagnostic and therapeutic
