II. Indications
- Cleaning fitting contraceptive devices in clinic
- Cleans Diaphragm and Cervical Caps between patients
- Not for cleaning these devices at home
- Patients may use warm soapy water to clean
III. Technique: Cleaning fitting Cervical Caps between patients
- Scrub thoroughly in liquid detergent and water OR
- Soak in liquid soapy solution after use
- Use one of the three sterilization methods below
IV. Technique: Cleaning Method 1 - Autoclave
- Temperature: 121 degrees Celsius, 15 PSI
- Time: 20 minutes unwrapped or 30 minutes wrapped
- Drying: Allow to air dry (Do NOT use dry cycle)
- Storage: in container until use
V. Technique: Cleaning Method 2 - Bleach (e.g. Clorox)
- Soak in 1:10 dilution bleach for 30 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly under Running tap water
- Soak in 70% Isopropyl Alcohol for 15 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly under Running tap water
- Allow to air dry and store in container until use
VI. Technique: Cleaning Method 3 - Cidex (Glutaraldehyde)
- Other cleaning methods are preferred
- Causes deterioration of latex
- Cidex is hazardous to use in office setting
- Ensure adequate ventilation
- Immerse in 2% Cidex solution for 20 minutes
- Rinse and place in boiling water for 30 minutes
- Allow to air dry and store in container until use
