VII. Dosing

  1. Adult (and child age >12 years): 200 mg orally three times daily after meals (for up to 2 days)
  2. Child (age 6 to 12 years): 12 mg/kg/day divided three times daily for up to 2 days

VIII. Adverse Effects

  1. Discolors body fluids yellow-orange-red
    1. Including tears with staining of Contact Lenses (and stain clothing)
    2. Skin and Sclera may also have a yellow-orange tint
  2. Blood disorders
    1. Methemoglobinemia
    2. Hemolytic Anemia
  3. Carcinogenic (possible)
    1. Carcinogenic in rats as of 1981, and considered possibly carcinogenic in humans
    2. Has been used since 1930 (predating FDA regulation)
