II. Physiology: Temporomandibular Synovial joint
- Condylar process of Mandible articulates with mandibular fossa (part of Temporal Bone)
- Contains articular disk which allows for smooth hinge and sliding motion
- Disc is attached to posterior fossa via retrodiscal tendons, vessels and nerves
- Immediately anterior to external acoustic meatus
- Joint may be palpated from within ear canal
- Contains articular disk which allows for smooth hinge and sliding motion
- Joint lined by avascular and non-innervated fibrous connective tissue
- Resists degeneration better than hyaline cartilage lined joints
- Joint Pain originates from joint capsule and adjacent Muscle
- Mastication Muscles support the Temporomandibular Joint
III. Associated Conditions
- Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Displaced Temporomandibular Joint articular cartilage
- Temporomandibular Joint Dislocation
- Trismus
