    1. Circular dsDNA Viruses
    2. Naked (non-enveloped) icosahedral capsid

III. Types

  1. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
    1. HPV causes warts, Cervical Cancer and Anal Cancer
  2. Polyomavirus (2 viruses named with the initials of the first identified affected patients)
    1. BK Polyomavirus
      1. Infects >90% of children who remain asymptomatic
      2. Reactivated in Immunocompromised patients, with secondary specific complications
        1. Renal Transplant (nephritis, ureteral stenosis)
        2. Bone Marrow Transplant (hemorrhagic cystitis)
    2. JC Polyomavirus
      1. Majority of adults have been exposed during their lifetime to JC Virus (Antibody to JC Virus in >80%)
      2. Asymptomatic in healthy patients
      3. Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) may develop in Immunocompromised patients
