- Estimate whether CD4 Count is less than 200 in an HIV patient
III. Technique
- Measure Complete Blood Count with differential
- Determine the absolute number of Lymphocytes (absolute Lymphocyte Count or ALC)
IV. Interpretation
- Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) <1000 to 1250 cells/mm3
- CD4 Count is highly likely to be less than 200 cells/mm3
- Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) 1000 to 2000 cells/mm3
- Indeterminate range
- Inquire about AIDS-Defining Illness
- Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) >2000 cells/mm3
- CD4 Count is unlikely to be less than 200 cells/mm3
