II. Indication

  1. Estimate whether CD4 Count is less than 200 in an HIV patient

III. Technique

  1. Measure Complete Blood Count with differential
  2. Determine the absolute number of Lymphocytes (absolute Lymphocyte Count or ALC)

IV. Interpretation

  1. Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) <1000 to 1250 cells/mm3
    1. CD4 Count is highly likely to be less than 200 cells/mm3
  2. Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) 1000 to 2000 cells/mm3
    1. Indeterminate range
    2. Inquire about AIDS-Defining Illness
  3. Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) >2000 cells/mm3
    1. CD4 Count is unlikely to be less than 200 cells/mm3
