II. Mechanism

  1. Semifluorinated alkane that is water-free and preservative-free
  2. Forms stable, moisture retaining layer over the eye surface
  3. Decreases tear evaporation and stabilizes tear film

III. Dosing

  1. On drop instilled 4 times daily
  2. Wait at least 3-5 minutes when using other ophthalmic drops

IV. Adverse Effects

  1. Well tolerated without serious adverse effects
  2. Blurred Vision and Conjunctival redness occur in 1-3% of patients (similar to saline drops)
  3. Very expensive ($800 per month in 2025)
    1. Contrast with artificial tears ($10/month)

V. Drug Interactions

  1. Contact Lenses
    1. Do not use Perfluorohexyloctane (Miebo) with Contact Lenses in place
    2. Remove Contact Lenses before instilling drops
    3. Wait at least 30 minutes before placing Contact Lenses

VI. Safety

  1. Unknown safety in pregnancy
  2. Unknown safety in age <18 years (has not been studied as of release in 2025)

VII. Efficacy

  1. Appears slightly more effective than saline drops in improving Dry Eyes and Vision
