- Prevalence: 20% of U.S, adults
- Most common in older women (esp. affecting Fingernails)

- Nails crumble, split or flake
IV. Types: Brittleness Patterns
- Background
- More than one pattern may coexist in the same nail
- Onychorrhexis
- Superficial longitudinal parallel furrows and fissures
- Lamellar Onychoschizia
- Splitting of the free margin of the distal nail, in horizontal layers
- Superficial keratin granulation
- Distal nail with fragile, small opaque white patches and striations
V. Causes
- Nail Trauma or Idiopathic (most common)
- Aging
- Associated with decreased nail lipid content, and nail plate Keratinocyte defects
- Secondary
- Inflammatory conditions (e.g. Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, Eczema)
VI. Management
- Treat underlying secondary causes
- May consider nail hardener
