Premedication for Allergy Prevention

Aka: Premedication for Allergy Prevention, Medication Allergy Prophylaxis
  1. Indications: Higher risk of serious Allergic Reaction
    1. Antitoxin use (risk of Serum Sickness)
    2. Patients with history of multiple drug sensitivities
  2. Preparation
    1. Discuss risks and benefits with patient
    2. Be prepared to treat Anaphylaxis
  3. Protocol: Administer prior to suspected medication
    1. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) 1 mg/kg up to 50 mg IV
    2. Cimetidine (Tagamet) 6 mg/kg IV up to 300 mg IV
