III. Technique: Hot Keys and Mouse

  1. Movie Controls
    1. SpaceBar: Play/Pause
  2. Objects
    1. Ctrl-D: Duplicate
    2. F2-Deselect
  3. Keys
    1. J: Previous Key
    2. K: Next Key
    3. PageDown: Frame Back
    4. PageUp: Frame Forward
  4. Trimming (with layer selected, and time slider set to specific time point)
    1. Trim Start (alt-OPEN_BRACKET)
    2. Trim End (alt-CLOSE_BRACKET )
    3. Once trimmed, the gray background of trimmed layer may be moved with mouse (or pan behind tool)
  5. Timeline Object (use SHIFT key to add, use ALT key to set keyframe)
    1. A: Open Anchor point parameters
    2. P: Open Position parameters
    3. R: Open Rotation parameters
    4. S: Open Scale parameters
    5. T: Open Opacity parameters
  6. Expand Layers
    1. U: Expand selected layers to show keyed frames
    2. U-U: Expand all modified properties
  7. Animation
    1. F9: Convert key interpolation to Ease-Ease
    2. Scale animation
      1. Consider overshooting scale increase in graph editor (scales larger than final size, and returns to intended size)
  8. Anchor Point
    1. Y: Move anchor point (pivot point)
    2. Ctrl-Alt-Home
      1. Center anchor point (pivot point)
  9. Selections
    1. F2 (or Ctrl-Alt-A)
      1. Deselect All
  10. Colors
    1. External-Application color selection
      1. Hover over area of screen to sample color and press enter button without clicking

IV. Technique: Composition

  1. Importing Content
    1. Right Click in the project Window > Import (Ctrl-I)
    2. May create composition automatically on import
  2. Creating New Composition
    1. Create a new folder to house the composition and associated content
    2. Right Click in the project Window > Create Composition (or click icon at bottom of window)
  3. Creating Single Composition from Multiple Footage
    1. In project window, select footage (ctrl-click) in order of their use
    2. Right-Click in Project Window > New Composition from Selection
    3. Use Dimensions from Video
    4. Set Still Duration (how long still images will display)
    5. Check Sequence Layers (will order by how they were selected) with or without overlap
  4. Compositing Process
    1. Drag content into timeline area, create primitive objects and arrange
    2. Animate Objects
    3. Modify timing
  5. Shorten Composition
    1. Move time slider to position to make change
    2. Change work area
      1. B - Begining of composition
      2. N - End of composition
    3. Right click in region and choose trim comp to work area

V. Technique: Output

  1. Menu: Composition > Add to Media Encoder Queue
  2. In Adobe Media Encoder
    1. Select a Preset from Preset Browser (e.g. Social Media > YouTube)
      1. For online viewing, 720p is sufficient for most uses
    2. Drag the preset to the Queue Window
    3. Click preset in Queue Window to edit
      1. To reduce file output size, drop bitrate from 16 down to 5-8
