- Calcium is best absorbed in doses of 500 mg or less

- Yogurt or frozen yogurt 8 ounces
- Calcium-Fortified Orange Juice 8 ounces
- Milk 8 ounces
- Firm Cheese 1 to 1.5 ounces
- Canned Sardines 3 ounces
- Cooked greens, collards, or mustard 1-2 cups or 8 oz
VIII. Preparations: Calcium Carbonate
- Advantages
- Most elemental calcium (40%)
- Tablet 650 mg contains 250 mg elemental calcium
- Least expensive calcium preparation
- Administration
- Take with meals or citrus juice
- Absorption reduced with Fasting or achlorhydria

- Tums 500 mg orall daily to three times daily

- No Constipation

Your body needs calcium to help muscles and blood vessels contract and expand, to secrete hormones and enzymes and to send messages through the nervous system. It is important to get plenty of calcium in the foods you eat. Foods rich in calcium include dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt, and leafy, green vegetables. The exact amount of calcium you need depends on your age and other factors. Growing children and teenagers need more calcium than young adults. Older women need plenty of calcium to prevent osteoporosis. People who do not eat enough high-calcium foods should take a calcium supplement.
