Absolute Lymphocyte Count Estimation of CD4 Count, ALC-Based CD4 Estimate

  • Indication
  1. Estimate whether CD4 Count is less than 200 in an HIV patient
  • Technique
  1. Measure Complete Blood Count with differential
  2. Determine the absolute number of Lymphocytes (absolute Lymphocyte Count or ALC)
  • Interpretation
  1. Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) <1000 cells/mm3
    1. CD4 Count is highly likely to be less than 200 cells/mm3
  2. Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) 1000 to 2000 cells/mm3
    1. Indeterminate range
    2. Inquire about AIDS-Defining Illness
  3. Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) >2000 cells/mm3
    1. CD4 Count is unlikely to be less than 200 cells/mm3
