  1. Newer synthetic Progestin
  2. Antiandrogenic activity similar to Progesterone
  3. Lowest Androgenic Activity
    1. Marginal benefit over other low androgen OCPs
  4. Antimineralcorticoid effect (Related to Spironolactone)
    1. Only OCP Progestin with antimineralcorticoid activity
    2. Drospirenone 3 mg is equivalent to 25 mg Spironolactone

  1. Similar to other Oral Contraceptives
  • Formulations
  1. Yaz (3/20 with 24 days and 4 Placebo days)
  2. Yasminelle (3/20 with 21 days and 7 Placebo days)
  3. Yasmin, Ocella or Zarah (3/30)
  1. Indicated if concurrent use of drugs listed above
  • Adverse Effects

  2. Potassium retention (see above)
  3. May be associated with higher Thromboembolism risk
  • Advantages
  1. May be associated with less weight gain than other OCP
  2. As effective as other OCPs in Acne Vulgaris
