Sulfosalicylic Acid Test

  3. Efficacy
    1. Highly sensitive for Urine Protein
    2. Detects light chain Proteins
  4. Technique
    1. Urine mixed with 20% Sulfosalicylic Acid (SSA)
    2. Variation in results may be as much as 20%
    3. Urine turbidity measured with photometer (increased turbidity with precipitated Protein)
      1. Turbidity reported as trace to 4+
  5. Interpretation: Positive Test
    1. See Proteinuria
  6. Interpretation: False Positive causes
    1. Radiographic contrast agents (in last 3 days)
    2. Tolbutamide
    3. Penicillins
    4. Sulfisoxazole
  7. Interpretation: Negative Test
    1. False Proteinuria
    2. Renal Tubules not reabsorbing
