- Elderly represent most cases
- Volvulus occurrs within large paraesophageal Hernias
- Stomach typically twists along its long axis (organoaxial Volvulus)
- Infants (20% of cases)
- Volvulus occurrs within congenital Diaphragmatic Hernias
- Stomach typically twists along its short axis (Mesenteroaxial Volvulus)
- Findings
- Borchardt Triad
- Severe Epigastric Pain
- Abdominal Distention
- Vomiting
- Management
- Attempt Nasogastric Tube placement
- Often difficult to pass, but if successful, may reduce Volvulus
- Consult surgery emergently
- However, unlike other Volvulus, redundant circulation often prevent gastric infarction
