- Indications
- Not indicated as first line Osteomyelitis imaging
- Other modalities are preferred for Osteomyelitis imaging (e.g. Osteomyelitis MRI, Osteomyelitis Bone Scan)
- Standard CT has low efficacy in Osteomyelitis
- Osteomyelitis PET Scan has high efficacy (however very expensive)
- Indicated in identifying sequestra (islands of necrotic bone)
- May be used in defining Vertebral Osteomyelitis involvement
- Consider for CT-guided bone biopsy
- Protocol
- Perform with IV Contrast for better soft tissue evaluation
- Findings
- Cortical Bone osteolysis
- Small gas foci
- Foreign body
- Sequestra (islands of necrotic bone)
- Efficacy
- Test Sensitivity: 24-67% in Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis
- Test Specificity: 50% in Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis
