Eslicarbazepine
Aka: Eslicarbazepine, Aptiom
- Indications
- Adjunctive agent in Refractory Partial-Onset Seizures
- Bipolar Disorder
- Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Mechanism
- Antiepileptic
- Sodium Channel Blocker (similar to Carbamazepine and Oxcarbazepine)
- Dosing
- Normal Renal Function
- Initial: 400 mg orally once daily for 1 week
- Maintenance: 800 mg orally once daily
- Maximum dose: 1200 mg/day
- Decreased Renal Function to Creatinine Clearance <50 ml/min
- Initial: 200 mg orally once daily for 2 weeks
- Maintenance: 400 mg orally once daily
- Maximum dose: 600 mg/day
- Adverse Effects
- Dizziness
- Somnolence
- Headache
- Double Vision

Drug Interactions
- Do not use with other similar Sodium Channel Blocker agents such as Carbamazepine and Oxcarbazepine
- Hormonal contraceptives
- Eslicarbazepine decreases the contraceptive efficacy
- Use alternative, non-hormonal agents or backup Contraception
