  2. Definitions
    1. Cerebrospinal Fluid
      1. Clear, colorless fluid produced in the Choroid plexus within the walls of the Cerebral Ventricles
        1. CSF typically contains no white or Red Blood Cells (WBCs or RBCs) and low levels of Protein
        2. CSF is produced in the Choroid plexus of fluid filled chambers known as ventricles
      2. Flows through the Cerebral Ventricles within the subarachnoid space
      3. Surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord
  3. Physiology
    1. Choroid Plexus: Formation of CSF
      1. Tufts of capillaries in Lateral Ventricles
      2. Produces CSF at 20 ml/hour (up to 500 ml/day)
    2. Pathway
      1. See Cerebral Ventricle for Cerebrospinal Flow
      2. CSF flows down Magendie and Luschka canals and via subarachnoid space around the brain and spinal cord
    3. CSF Reabsorption
      1. CSF reabsorption at the arachnoid villi and dural sinuses
      2. Drains into the internal Jugular Veins
    4. CSF Volume
      1. Total CSF in circulation: 140 ml
      2. Distribution
        1. Ventricles: 25 ml
        2. Subarachnoid space: 115 ml

Cerebrospinal Fluid (C0007806)

Definition (FMA) Transudate contained in the subarachnoid space.
Definition (UWDA) Transudate contained in the subarachnoid space.
Definition (NCI_NCI-GLOSS) The fluid that flows in and around the hollow spaces of the brain and spinal cord, and between two of the meninges (the thin layers of tissue that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord). CSF is made by tissue called the choroid plexus in the ventricles (hollow spaces) in the brain.
Definition (NCI) The fluid that is contained within the brain ventricles, the subarachnoid space and the central canal of the spinal cord.
Definition (NCI_CDISC) The fluid that is contained within the brain ventricles, the subarachnoid space and the central canal of the spinal cord. (NCI)
Definition (MSH) A watery fluid that is continuously produced in the CHOROID PLEXUS and circulates around the surface of the BRAIN; SPINAL CORD; and in the CEREBRAL VENTRICLES.
Definition (CSP) clear colorless liquid secreted by the choroid plexus of the lateral, third, and fourth ventricles, and contained within the ventricular system of the brain and spinal cord and within the subarachnoid space.
