Newborn Pulse Oximetry Screening for Congenital Heart Disease
Aka: Newborn Pulse Oximetry Screening for Congenital Heart Disease
- Indications
- Universal Newborn Screening for Congenital Heart Disease (at 24 hours of life, typically prior to discharge)
- Technique
- Obtain Oxygen Saturation in both the right hand (pre-ductal) and right foot (post-ductal)
- Protocol
- Oxygen Saturation should be 95% or higher in both extremities with a difference between extremities <3%
- Repeat Oxygen Saturation measurement in one hour if 90-94% in either extremity or 3% or greater difference between extremities
- Repeat Oxygen Saturation a third time in one hour if still inadequate
- Obtain Echocardiogram for Oxygen Saturation <90% in either extremity or three failed measurements as above
