    2. Very light (0.93 to 1.006 g/ml), large (30-80 nm) Lipoproteins whose cores are primarily Triglycerides
    3. Surface is a phospholipid and Cholesterol monolayer with embedded apolipoprotein B, E and C
    4. Transport Triglycerides from the liver to Muscle and fat cells
      1. As Triglycerides and Apo C are off-loaded, VLDL becomes intermediate density Lipoprotein (IDL), and then LDL Cholesterol
  3. Components
    1. Triglycerides
    2. Cholesterol and Cholesterol esters
  4. Interpretation: Normal
    1. Normal: 10-31 mg/dl
    2. Calculation
      1. VLDL Cholesterol = (Triglycerides / 5)
  5. Causes: Increased
    1. Idiopathic increased hepatic secretion of VLDL

Very low density lipoprotein (C0023825)

Definition (CSP) class of lipoproteins that transport triglycerides from the intestine and liver to adipose and muscle tissues.
Definition (MSH) A class of lipoproteins of very light (0.93-1.006 g/ml) large size (30-80 nm) particles with a core composed mainly of TRIGLYCERIDES and a surface monolayer of PHOSPHOLIPIDS and CHOLESTEROL into which are imbedded the apolipoproteins B, E, and C. VLDL facilitates the transport of endogenously made triglycerides to extrahepatic tissues. As triglycerides and Apo C are removed, VLDL is converted to INTERMEDIATE-DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS, then to LOW-DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS from which cholesterol is delivered to the extrahepatic tissues.
