II. Definitions

  1. Teratoma
    1. Non-seminomatous germ cell tumor
    2. Pluripotent cells, containing various germ cell origins (endoderm, mesoderm, ectoderm)
    3. Found in the Testis, ovary as well as extra-genital sights (e.g. CNS, mediastinum, lung, Stomach, Sacrum)
    4. Mature Teratomas contain well-differentiated adult type tissues (e.g. calcified teeth, hair)
    5. Immature Teratomas contain fetal type tissues
    6. Teratomas may be benign or malignant
  2. Benign Ovarian Teratoma
    1. Benign ovarian germ cell tumor
  3. Dermoid Ovarian Cyst (Mature Ovarian Teratoma)
    1. Type of Ovarian Cystic Teratoma, typically unilateral
    2. Presents as Ovarian Mass often with sebaceous material, hair, calcified teeth, fat, bone, Muscle and other tissue
    3. Mature Ovarian Teratomas without fetal tissue types are benign in most cases (>98%)

III. Imaging: Ultrasound findings

  1. Ovarian Mass with hyperechoic area with acoustic shadow
  2. Fluid-fluid level with echogenic fluid above
  3. Hyperechoic lines and spots (dermoid mesh)

Ontology: Teratoma (C0039538)

Definition (MSH) A true neoplasm composed of a number of different types of tissue, none of which is native to the area in which it occurs. It is composed of tissues that are derived from three germinal layers, the endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm. They are classified histologically as mature (benign) or immature (malignant). (From DeVita Jr et al., Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology, 3d ed, p1642)

Definition (NCI_CDISC) A germ-cell neoplasm derived from pluripotent cells and consisting of components from one or more of the three germ-cell layers, for which the malignancy status has not been established.
Definition (NCI) A non-seminomatous germ cell tumor characterized by the presence of various tissues which correspond to the different germinal layers (endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm). It occurs in the testis, ovary, and extragonadal sites including central nervous system, mediastinum, lung, and stomach. According to the level of differentiation of the tissues which comprise the tumor, teratomas are classified as mature or immature. Mature teratomas are composed of well differentiated, adult-type tissues. Immature teratomas are composed of immature, fetal-type tissues. Testicular teratomas in children follow a benign clinical course. Mature ovarian teratomas without a fetal-type component have an excellent outcome. The prognosis of immature ovarian teratomas is related to the grade and stage of the tumor.
Definition (NCI_NCI-GLOSS) A type of germ cell tumor that may contain several different types of tissue, such as hair, muscle, and bone. Teratomas occur most often in the ovaries in women, the testicles in men, and the tailbone in children. Not all teratomas are malignant.
Definition (CSP) true neoplasm composed of a number of different types of tissue, none of which is native to the area in which it occurs; composed of tissues that are derived from three germinal layers, the endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm; may be solid or cystic and are classified histologically as mature, immature, and malignant.
