III. Physiology

  1. Sensory for pain, touch and Temperature
    1. Mucosa of pharynx, fauces, and Palatine Tonsil
  2. Taste Sensation for posterior third of Tongue
  3. Motor with CN 9 to pharynx

IV. Anatomy

  1. Nucleii in Medulla
    1. Somatic Motor Nucleii
      1. Nucleus Ambiguous transmits signals for Swallowing
    2. Visceral Motor Nucleii
      1. Inferior Salivatory nucleus innervates Parotid Gland (via otic Ganglion)
    3. Visceral Sensory Nucleii
      1. Nucleus Solitarius transmits taste signals from posterior third of Tongue
      2. Also transmits signals from carotid body and carotid sinus
    4. Somatic Sensory Nucleii
      1. Spinal Nucleus of CN 5 transmits signals from External Ear and posterior third of Tongue
  2. Course
    1. neuroGlossopharyngealNucleusCN9.png
    2. Starts in one of four nucleii in the Medulla (see above)
    3. Passes through jugular foramen of skull
      1. Accompanied by CN 10 and CN 11
    4. Follows Internal Carotid Artery
    5. Passes under styloid process and then into pharynx
    6. Synapses at superior ganglia and inferior ganglia

V. Exam

  1. Done concurrently with Exam of CN 10
